University of Cebu College of Law Students Visit School Children
by Jennelyn D. Bilocura

The University of Cebu College Law Human Rights of the Child Class, under the tutelage of Atty. Cheryl Cabutihan, visited two schools in Consolacion, Cebu on October 7, 2011. The activity was initiated by the class to meet and lecture to the school children various topics related to human rights of the child. The class was divided into eight groups and seven groups went to Our Lady of Joy and one group, together with the law professor, went to The Forum. In Our Lady of Joy, the groups met their respective class assignments, from grade-one to second year students. In The Forum, on the other hand, the group met the grade four class. Maintainers of this blog participated in the event.

Even though the lectures ran for only more or less one and a half hour, the activity brought life time memories on the part of the lecturers. Who would expect a grade school child ask point-for-point questions like, "Do children have a right to be respected by their parents?" or say " I thought Right to Opinion is not a child's right because parents might get angry at us if we tell them our opinions."

The activity was very timely because the month of October is Children's Month.

The class was very happy for the two schools' warm welcome and very thankful to a classmate, Carmie Masangkay, for the initiative in contacting the aforementioned visited schools.

Children's Health and Chemical Safety Workshop
by: Jennelyn D. Bilocura

The Ecowaste Coalition, Philippine Earth Justice Center and University of Cebu College of Law organized Children's Health and Chemical Safety Workshop in the University of Cebu, Banilad, Cebu City last August 25, 2011.

The workshop aims to raise awareness for the protect ion of children  against toxic exposure. Unknown to parents, their children are exposed to toxic because of  letting them use products, like school supplies and toys, which are reach in hazardous elementts like lead, mercury and more.

Dr. Bessie Antonio said that there is really difficulty in determining the level of exposure of the child to certain toxics because toxic metals cannot be quantified. Indeed, there is no 100 percent safe place for children.

It is then suggested, that manufacturers or producers  should indicate in their products the latters chemical contents. This is for parents to know which product is safe for their children. The same suggestion does not only benefit parents and their children, but rather all consumers in general.

PEJC lawyer Gloria Estenzo Ramos said there has to be a certification council to be represented by the academe and government agencies. This council can urge manufacturers to use other alternative products instead of toxic metals.

For further information on the causes of products with high toxicity the above power point presentation  on Electronic Waste by Kristine Athena Monsanto is provided.
